Administrative / Biographical History
Teifion T Phillips, born 1917 in Pontardawe, was a history teacher, and later headteacher at Barry Boys' County School/Barry Comprehensive School. Following education at Ystalyfera Grammar School he attended the University College of Swansea. During the War he served in the Pays Corps and the Royal Army Education Corps. He married Marion Roberts in 1945 and following the end of the war, he took up the position of history teacher at Barry Boys' County School in 1946. He was a very popular and influential teacher and many of his pupils went on to read history at Oxford and many other universities. In 1971 he became headteacher of the school, and remained in this position until his retirement in 1981. Outside of his school work, Teifion was an active member of the Labour Party, receiving a long service award to honour a lifetime's commitment to the party in 2000. He remained in Barry until his death in 2002.
