Pembrokeshire County Council, Social Services records, 1924-1974, including records of the Public Assistance Committee, 1924-1961; records of the Children's Department, 1947-1974; and records of the Welfare Department, 1934-1974.

Poor Law Unions were abolished by the Local Government Act 1927; from 1930, their functions were carried out by the County Council, covering the health and welfare of children, the elderly, and the infirm, exercised through the Public Assistance Committee and through local Guardian's Committes for the different districts, until 1946-1948, when medical duties passed to the Ministry of Health. The National Assistance Act 1948 left Pembrokeshire County Council with responsibility for children and the elderly. In 1948, the Public Assistance Committee was abolished and replaced by a Welfare Committee and a Children's Committee. In 1970 the protection and care of children were absorbed into the new Social Services Department. The Welfare Department was responsible for the collection of maintenance contributions from parents. In 1974, the Council was absorbed by Dyfed County Council.
