Scope and Content

The papers of Prof. Alexander Christison consist of a folder containing: a history of the progressive errors of physics, Edinburgh, 1793 (manuscript); extracts from Town Council Register relating to the University of Edinburgh, 11 June 1809; notes of entries in the Council Records about the College taken from an index in the Town Council's office; an act of the Council of the City of Edinburgh in favour of Mr Alexander Christison appointing him one of the masters of the High School of the said city, 1786; papers relating to a commission appointing Alexander Christison Professor of Humanity in the University, 1806; a list of Mr Christison's class during the years 1799, 1800, 1801, 1802 and 1803; bill. concert of music in the Canongate Theatre, undated; a booklet entitled 'Notice of life and character of Alexander Christison, A. M. by George Dunbar, 1820' (Printed); a manuscript on the 'Education of officers in the Army', undated; and manuscript extracts from Kirk session minutes, 1785.

Also includes a bundle of correspondence from the 1810s, including letters from Dugald Stewart; an ink drawing of Prof. Alexander Christison, and a letter dated 17 November 1979 from a researcher doing a biographical study on James Cowles Prichard, who dedicated his inaugural thesis on Alexander Christison. Photocpies of the thesis's title page and dedication are enclosed.
