Scope and Content

Letters to George Augustus Selwyn (1719-91) from Horace Walpole and others, typed list of Selwyn's correspondents, and five notebooks of indexes. As follows:-

(1) Folder containing eight letters from Horace Walpole to Selwyn, 1759-79 (printed, with three other letters in MSS/0444/6, in W. S. Lewis, Horace Walpole's Correspondence, 30 (1961), 155-8, 209-21, 268-76, 281), and one letter of Warren Hastings to Sir John Clerke, 8 June 1776. See CEL/19 for other correspondence of the Clerke family;-

(2) Folder of letters to Selwyn numbered 1-58 (lacks 5, 6), 1743-80, many undated. Correspondents include Frederick, 2nd Viscount Bolinbroke (nos. 22-4), Charles Townshend (nos. 25-9), Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland (nos. 30-5), Mme du Deffand (nos. 37-58), and other French correspondents. Fifty-one letters (28 from Mme du Deffand) to Selwyn in the Cely-Trevilian collection were published by R. A. Barrell, George Augustus Selwyn (1719-1791) and France (Edwin Mellen Press, 1990);-

(3) Five notebooks (three quarto, two octavo) of indexes to the Cely-Trevilian (Vincent) collection, annotated with prices (octavo notebooks), and dates of death, but lacking volume references; 19th century;-

(4) Typed list of George Selwyn's correspondents in CEL/04-06, 1740-85. Compiled and presented by J. R. Christie, 1951.
