Administrative / Biographical History

The correspondence relates to the search for the missing British Naval Northwest Passage Expedition, 1845-1848 (leader Sir John Franklin). In 1857 Lady Franklin sent a private expedition under the command of Francis Leopold McClintock to the Arctic, which returned with the first written record from the expedition.
