Papers of Arthur Marsh (1922-1999), academic and industrial arbitrator

This collection includes papers relating to the iron and steel industry, the engineering industry, the motor industry, the Royal Commission on Trade Unions and Employers' Associations and arbitration or appeal proceedings heard by Marsh.

Arthur Ivor Marsh was born in 1922 and educated in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and at Hertford College, Oxford. After serving during the Second World War, he undertook research at the Oxford University Agricultural Economics Research Unit and from 1948 to 1964 was a staff tutor at the Oxford University Delegacy for Extra-Mural Studies. He was elected a Labour councillor in Oxford on 8 May 1958.

Arthur Marsh's specialism was the study of industrial relations and in 1964 he was appointed as Senior Research Fellow in Industrial Relations at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. In 1966 Marsh was commissioned by the Ministry of Labour to undertake research into the motor industry and he also undertook research for the Donovan Commission on Trade Unions and Employers' Associations, 1965-1968. He was an arbitrator in many trades disputes from 1965 and between 1967 and 1972 was a commissioner on pay structure to the government of Gibraltar.

Arthur Marsh's publications on industrial relations were numerous and included The Seamen (1989), The Clerks (1997) and the Historical Directory of Trade Unions, volumes 1-4 (1980-1994). Arthur Marsh died in 1999.
