Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The school was originally the boys' department of the GNR St James' Schools, which were destroyed by fire on 21 October 1895. Standards I-III (boys) and I-II (girls) moved to a temporary school in Beechfield and the other boys, whose headmaster kept the first log book listed here, moved to the old Co-operative Society Assembly room in Spring Gardens.
A new school was opened in January 1897 in Stirling Street and in January 1905 the school was renamed Stirling Street Council School on its transfer from the GNR school managers to the Doncaster Corporation. The school closed in July 1961 on amalgamation with the St James' Junior Girls and Infants school (for further records see refs. SR23 and SR24).
