Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
John Nicholson ("Nicky"), who became Principal in 1935, led the campaign to achieve the College's independence. This was achieved on 13 May 1954 when a Royal Charter was granted and the University of Hull became a separate institution with the right to award its own degrees. Lord Middleton was installed as the University of Hull's first Chancellor in July 1955. The number of applications doubled within a year, and in 1956, the student population topped 1,000 for the first time.
