Papers of Sir Harold Corti Emmerson, 1896–1984, civil servant

Harold Emmerson was born in Warrington on 7 April 1896. After World War I he joined the Ministry of Labour and remained there for most of his career, holding the position of permanent secretary between 1956 and 1959. He was also permanent secretary at the Ministry of Works from 1946 to 1956. He was knighted in 1947.

After his retirement in 1959, Emmerson served on a variety of official committees, most importantly the Council on Prices, Productivity and Incomes (1960–1962) and the Portland spy security inquiry (1963–1965). He died on 2 August 1984 at his home, Littlebourne House, Littlebourne, Kent.
