Scope and Content

The Committee was set up to oversee the implementation of the Local Government Act, 1929 (19 & 20 Geo. V c. 17). In March 1931 it was re-named, having been given responsibility for town planning matters under Part III of the Act which permitted county councils to act jointly with district and borough councils in the preparation of Town Planning Schemes. In Oxfordshire the County Council participated in a number of Joint Town/Regional Planning Committees (see below). The Committee also inherited the local government and parliamentary functions of the General Purposes Committee (see CC1/5) until April 1934 when these were transferred to the Local Government, General Purposes and Selection Committee (see CC1/24). In January 1939 the Committee was reconstituted, inheriting the functions and title of the County Regional Planning (Advisory) Committee, to provide it with a stronger co-ordinating role in relation to the local planning authorities. In December 1947 it was replaced by a new Planning Committee (see CC1/31).

The minutes of the Joint Regional Planning Committees can be found in most cases with the planning records of the relevant district and borough councils, as follows: (1) Banbury and District (BB/VII & Banbury RDC/VIII) (2) Mid-Oxon. (Ploughley RDC/VII) (3) Thame and District (Thame UDC/VI) (4) Witney and District (Witney RDC/V & Witney UDC/IV) (5) South Oxon. (Henley RDC/XI) (6) Chipping Norton and District (CNRDC/III & VII).
