Records of the Journal of Moral Education 1971-2012

The records of the Journal of Moral Education split into the following series: meeting minutes of the Journal of Moral Education; annual general meeting minutes of the Journal of Moral Education Trust; various promotional materials; publications; conference and event programmes; legal documentation; correspondence; standard documents; and photographs.

Although this collection covers the period from the Journal's inauguration in 1971 to 2012, the file also contains a copy of the Constitution of the Social Morality Council from 1969, which is part of the legal documentation (JME/6/2).

The Journal of Moral Education was inaugurated in 1971 in the UK with the support of the Social Morality Council, an organisation which promoted school curriculum developments in the areas of personal and social morality. The journal was used to consider various questions relating to the broad topic of moral education using a multi-disciplinary approach. It was originally led by an editorial board composed of well-known British educationalists and academics, but it increasingly became international in both the composition of the editorial team and range of its contributors, as well as in its scope and content. In 1997/1998 the journal became a registered company and also obtained charitable status becoming the Journal of Moral Education Trust. The goal of the Trust, and the Journal, is to 'advance public education and promote research in the theory and practice of moral education'.
