HALLAM, Paul (b.1952)

Papers of Paul Hallam, including correspondence, scripts, research notes and other material (c.1940-2010)

Paul Hallam wrote and co-wrote a number of screenplays including: A Kind of English (Ruhul Amin), Caught Looking (Constantine Giannaris), Nighthawks, Strip Jack Naked (Ron Peck), Young Soul Rebels (Isaac Julien) and Soho (Ron Peck). He also wrote The Dish, a play which was performed in London, New York and Toronto. A BBC Radio 4 adaptation of The Dish was broadcast in August 1998. His first book, The Book of Sodom, was published by Verso. A long excerpt from the book appeared in The Postmodern Bible Reader (Blackwell, 2001). In 2008 Hallam was working on a second book, on sex and time. If You Look at It Long Enough - an essay on pornography for The Journal of Homosexuality was also published by Harrington Park Press (2004). For the Asking, an essay on the 'promise' of prostitution, was published in The Journal of Sexuality and Culture in 2006. His Brief play series on prostitute/client relations has appeared in various forms - performance, video and publication. He also worked on Bookmobile, a multifaceted art/design research project. He was Writer in Residence at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts, London (1996/7) and taught at Kingston University. When his archive was deposited at Bishopsgate in 2013, Hallam was living in Istanbul and working in London.
