Derek Ingram was a British journalist and author, who was widely acknowledged as a leading authority on issues related to the Commonwealth of Nations. He co-founded the Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) in 1978, and served as President of the CJA from 1980. In 1990, he was elected President Emeritus. The CJA provided training all around the world. Derek Ingram worked for the Daily Mail for seventeen years, eventually becoming the deputy editor. A difference of opinion with the chairman, Viscount Rothermere, caused him to resign from the paper. Gemini News Service was founded on 1 January 1967 by Derek Ingram and Oliver Carruthers. Their ambition was to improve the flow of news between developed and developing worlds by providing subscribers with news and commentary from across the world. The Panos Institute took over the management of Gemini in 1999 and the service continued until its closure in 2002. In 1987 Derek Ingram was instrumental in the establishment of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative. He was a member of the Round Table Moot from 1971. The Commonwealth summit in Malta in 2005 was the nineteenth consecutive summit covered by Derek Ingram, who was also a vice-president of the Royal Commonwealth Society. Derek Ingram was the author of several books including The Commonwealth at Work (1969).
