Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Malton is situated on a former Roman settlement though there is some debate whether it is Derventio or Delgovicia. From the latter half of the first century it was clearly an important settlement on the bank of the River Derwent and archaeological excavations have un-earthered streets, evidence of a cavalry fort, metal working, at least one townhouse with a mosaic and painted walls. Malton was part of the strategic road network around York and the River Humber ferry crossing at Brough.
