Edward John Dunn Collection

A collection of prints of various sizes. The photographs are mostly family portraits and albumen print cartes de visite of leading individuals in South Africa during his time. However, there are also some photographs of his retirement home, Roseneath, showing artifacts he had collected (35-53).

Edward John Dunn was born in Bristol in 1844 but when he was five his parents emigrated to Australia, where he eventually became a geologist. Returning to England in 1871 he broke his journey at the Cape and spent two years investigating the mineral potentialities of the Colony. After further training in England, he returned to South Africa in 1875. In 1886 Dunn went back to Australia and eventually became director of the Geological Survey of Victoria. After his retirement in 1912 Dunn continued his geological and anthropological researches. He died aged 92 on 20 April 1937.
