Administrative / Biographical History
Co-operative societies originally appeared in the 19th century, and were formed by businesses and individuals to offer mutual support and ensure fair trade. They developed from local businesses, and included a wide range of trades and products. During the 20th century, many local co-operatives merged into larger regional bodies or formed regional associations. A number of co-operative societies existed in Flintshire during the early 20th century, including Ewloe Place, Flint and Oakenholt, Maelor and District, Mynydd Isa, Queensferry and District, and North Wales Co-operative Association.
