Administrative / Biographical History
Canon Maurice Hill Ridgway (1918-2002) was a priest and scholar. He was born in Stockport, Cheshire, and grew up in the Chester area. He was ordained at Chester Cathedral, and served several parishes, including Bunbury, Cheshire, 1949-[1962], and Bowden, Cheshire, 1962-1983. He was made an honorary Canon of Chester Cathedral, 1966. He retired to Rhydycroesau, Shropshire. His interests included medieval stained glass and rood screens and Cheshire silver. His published works included Church plate of the St Asaph Diocese (Denbigh, 1997), and articles for periodicals, including Archaeologia Cambrensis. Canon Ridgway died on 20 December 2002. Frederick Herbert Crossley, FSA (1868-1955), of Chester, was an authority on wood carving and church furniture, and wrote many articles on roofs, lofts and rood screens of Welsh churches for Archaeologia Cambrensis. He amassed a vast collection of photographs of medieval architecture, numbering about ten thousand negatives by 1932. A study of Welsh rood screens he conducted with Maurice Ridgway won the G. T. Clarke prize in 1946.
