Transcriptions of the Memoranda of William Brocklehurst Stonehouse

The volume contains three items:

• folios 1-49: Extracts from a folio volume of memoranda of W.B. Stonehouse, entitled: Memoranda Quaedam Delegationis Gul. B. Stonehouse Artium Magistri;
• folios 50-54: Transcript of notes on destroyed churches and chapels, entitled: Notes respecting churches & chapels destroyed in the Archd[eaconr]y of Stow (not in Stonehouse's hand);
• folios 55-65: Transcript of the Notitia of W.B. Stonehouse, entitled: The Notitia of the Venerable Archdeacon of Stow concerning his pilgrimage at Messingham during the period he was curate to the late Archdeacon Dr Bayley, vicar of that parish.

William Brocklehurst Stonehouse, MA, DCL, was born in Manchester in 1792. He was prebendary of Empingham, 1843-6, and served as archdeacon of Stow from 1844 until 1862 (see references for Prebendaries: Empingham and Archdeacons: Stow at http://www.british-history.ac.uk). He was the author of several antiquarian and theological works, including History and topography of the isle of Axholme: being that part of Lincolnshire which is west of Trent (London: Longman, Rees, Orme & Co. and others, 1839), and The alliance between church and state not the cause of those evils by which the influence of Christianity is impeded (London: 1848). His notes on churches in the archdeaconry of Stow were published by the Reverend Canon N.S. Harding under the title A Stow visitation (Lincoln: Keyworth & Sons, 1940). Stonehouse died at Owston, Lincolnshire, on 18 December 1862.
