Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Newport Transporter Bridge, Newport, Monmouthshire, was built over the River Usk between 1902 and 1906 and opened in September 1906. Its purpose was to provide a second crossing over the Usk without impeding high-masted ships. Passengers are carried in a gondola suspended under a high railway track between two towers and it is one of only seven such bridges in the world.
