Scope and Content

Since 1977 the post of Colonel has been shared between HRH the Duke of Gloucester, the Regiment's royal patron, and a senior retired officer. From 1977 until 2004, both were titled 'Joint Honorary Colonel'. In 2004, the Duke's title changed to 'Royal Honorary Colonel', while the other holder of the post - at the time Colonel George - became 'Honorary Colonel'.

The Honorary Colonel is the guardian of the status and traditions of the Regiment; the purpose of the role is to support and promote the Regiment, giving advice and assistance when required, attending and if necessary hosting functions and escorting dignitaries. The Honorary Colonel is also ex-officio chair of the trustees of the Castle and Regimental Museum, and President of the Dining Club
