Ian Hamnett, a social anthropologist, completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh on Sotho law and custom in Basutoland in 1970. He was subsequently senior lecturer in Sociology at the University of Bristol and is the author of Chieftainship and legitimacy: an anthropological study of executive law in Lesotho (London: Routledge, 1975).
