Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The date of the Company's first contact with Maldah is not known but a factory was established there in 1676. The town, situated in Bengal at the confluence of the Kalindri and Mahanadi rivers, was well placed for river traffic and was a centre for cotton and silk manufacture. The town became part of the Company's territories in 1765 and continued to be important commercially until the loss of the Company's trading monopoly.
