J E Day (died 1989) spent his working life in the Locomotive Accountant's Department of the LNER, subsequently British Railways. He, and his colleague in the department, Leslie Smith, were both avid local historians, who made a notable contribution to research on the history of Doncaster. They were jointly responsible for the rescue of the substantial archive of Baxter and Somerville, solicitors of Doncaster.
