Photographs of Mochudi

This material is held atRoyal Commonwealth Society Library

Scope and Content

Three photographs of the town, now part of Botswana, and one perhaps taken in its environs, by the South African photographer Thomas Daniel (T.D.) Ravenscroft. Ravenscroft began working as a photographer in the late 1880s and established a studio at Rondebosch, Cape Town, South Africa. All four photographs are stamped Rondebosch. During the first decade of the 20th century, he was commissioned by the Cape Government to take photographs of all towns in Southern Africa, including Rhodesia. Presumably these images form part of the series. He later opened a photographic studio in Riebeek Street, Malmesbury, producing postcards. In the 1930s he moved to Hermanuspieterusfontein (now called Hermanus) where he established a studio. He died there in 1948.
