Papers of Henry Lloyd

The collection is divided into two parts. The first part [U DHL/1-22] consists of manuscript material, a large of part of which is composed of notes and drafts of essays and lectures given by Henry Lloyd, and of correspondence, including letters relating to Lloyd's attempts to become Parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party at Croydon, Leeds, Norwood, Dulwich, Hull and East Hampshire between 1921 and 1927 [U DHL/7]. The first section also includes papers about Edgware Literary Society [U DHL/8], correspondence, articles and notes relating to Karel and Josef Capek [U DHL/9], papers on the Clerical and Administrative Workers' Union (formerly National Union of Clerks) [DHL/11], papers relating to the Co-operative Movement, and correspondence, articles and lecture notes on the Humanism and Ethical Association [DHL/17].

The second part of the collection [U DHL/23-163] consists of printed and published material and is predominantly made up of books and pamphlets on trade unionism, clerks, the labour movement and the Labour Party.

J. Henry Lloyd was an ethical reformer and trade unionist. He was sometime chairman of the Association of Public Health Lay Administrative Officers and eventually became President of the National Union of Clerks. He made several attempts to become Parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party at Croydon, Leeds, Norwood, Dulwich, Hull and East Hampshire between 1921 and 1927.
