Scope and Content

The bulk of this collection relates to rescue excavations at Sidi Khrebish, Benghazi, from 1971-1975.

The material includes the site notebooks, catalogues and lists and level analysis, as well as substantial collection of photographs and negatives of finds, the site, Cyrenaica more widely, and some of finds from Sabratha. There are also drawings of fragments of painted wall plaster from Sidi Khrebish and documents relating to completed or suspended Society publications.

Some records deposited by Kenrick have been added to existing series in the corporate papers of the SLS (SLS/D16). Notes have been added to these records indicating when this is the case.

Dr Philip Kenrick read Classics at Balliol College, Oxford, and later studied pottery from excavations at Sidi Khrebish, Benghazi, for his doctorate. Kenrick is a specialist in Hellenistic and Roman pottery and has held research posts in the universities of Reading (1982-84) and Oxford (1992-2000). He has been Treasurer (1994-2006) and President (2008-14) of the Rei Cretariae Romanae Fautores (an association dedicated to the study of Roman pottery). He was a founder member of the Society for Libyan Studies in 1969 and has served as a Member of Council (1976-80) and as Treasurer (2008-18). He has been involved in many archaeological projects in Libya since 1971 (Jabal Nafusah, Tripolitanian pre-desert, Sabratha, Lepcis Magna, Benghazi, Cyrene) and has written archaeological guides to Tripolitania (2009) and Cyrenaica (2013). He has also participated in excavations in Great Britain, Italy, Turkey and Jordan.

Much of the material relating to Sidi Khrebish was held by John A. Lloyd, Director of the expeditions, before being passed to Philip Kenrick, who deposited his papers with the Society for Libyan Studies in 2018. These make up D53, the John Lloyd papers. Some items have been added to SLS/D16, the Papers of the Society for Libyan Studies, in order to complete existing series. Where this is the case, this has been noted in the record's 'Admin History' field.
