Papers of Francis Robinson Martin

This small collection contains photocopies of the apprentice indenture and later Seaman's Discharge Certificate of Francis Robinson Martin.

Francis Martin was born in 1845 and apprenticed, aged 14, as a seaman. He came from Barton in Lincolnshire and was apprenticed for five years.

An apprenticeship indenture was a legal document whereby a master, in exchange for a sum of money (the 'premium'), agreed to instruct the apprentice in his or her trade or 'mystery' for a set term of years. The provision of food, clothing and lodging was generally part of the agreement.
