Administrative / Biographical History

Glasgow University was involved in helping to set up the University of East Africa and developing the medical and veterinary departments and sending lecturers on secondment. University Medical College, Nairobi, Faculty of Medicine received its first students in July 1967. With effect from 1 July 1970 the University of East Africa ceased to exist and the three constituent University Colleges became universities in their own right. University College, Nairobi became the National University of Nairobi; University College, Dar es Salaam became the University of Dar es Salaam; Makerere University College became Makerere University, Kampala.
