Administrative / Biographical History

There does not seem to be an organic connection between this estate and that of Lord Boston's, only that Lord Boston's agents, Mr. Nicholls Jones and after him Mr. Withinshaw, happened to act for both estates). It was a small estate, but the story of the owners is an interesting and picturesque as any in Anglesey. In 1867 it was owned by Sir Richard Waldie Griffith, who was descended from a younger branch of that new stem, whose members had sought their fortunes in Ireland in the reign of Queen Elizabeth; later one member of the family lived for a time in the East Indies , another became a Fellow of the Royal Society. There were many Irish intermarriages, and the atmosphere of the family was distinctly military. Dr Richard Waldie Griffith died about 1879, without issue; his interest in the Pencraig lands passed to his aunt who had married a Col. Bramston Smith of Co. Dublin; after their deaths, he in 1890, she in 1907, the estate devolved upon their two daughters, the elder who had married a Lieut.-Col. Phibbs of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, and the youger who had married a Capt. Newman of co.Cork. By 1916 the estate seems to have been in the possession of Mr. H.T.Daniell of London married to Mrs. Phibbs' daughter Maude. Another daughter was the first wife of Colonel Laurence Williams Parciau.
