Administrative / Biographical History

Denys Miller Sutton was born in 1917. He was educated at Uppington School and Exeter College, Oxford. Between 1940 and 1946 he worked in the Foreign Office Research Department before leaving and becoming the Secretary of the International Commission for Restitution of Cultural Material. In 1948 he became a Fine Arts Specialist for UNESCO and was a Fine Art Critic for Country Life and the Financial Times. He became a visiting lecturer at Yale University, USA, in 1949 and from 1962 he was editor of the art magazine, Apollo. Active on the international art scene, Sutton organised many high profile art exhibitions in England and America as well as publishing books on Picasso, French and Flemish art, the history of Christies auction house, contemporary art and the artist James Whistler. He died in 1991.
