Scope and Content

Ewelme Grammar School was founded by Alice de la Pole, granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer in 1437, though it did not become a National School until sometime in the 1830s. The School became a Primary School in 1944 and gained aided status in 1954. The medieval school buildings are still used by the Primary School and are the oldest maintained school buildings in the country. Please see CC4/80 for other records of this school.

The material was deposited as part of Acc 2526 in February 1986. Recatalogued by Alison Smith in November 2013.
