Administrative / Biographical History

Marjorie Beatrice Barnard worked in London as a secretary, at one time for Bentley & Co., before passing the Civil Service Examination. In 1936, she accepted employment in Nigeria, working as Official Reporter for the Nigerian Legislative Council and Confidential Secretary to the Governor, Sir Bernard Bourdillon (1935-43). Barnard worked in the Secretariat in Lagos and lived in a wooden house nearby, overlooking the harbour. While travelling by ship to England in 1937, Barnard met the Gold Coast agricultural officer Charles Lynn (1908-85), and they married on 28 August of that year.
