Administrative / Biographical History
Hubert Childs (1905-1983) was educated at Oakham School, and University College, Oxford. He was on military service during 1941-1946.
Childs entered the Colonial Administrative Service in 1928 and was posted to Nigeria. In 1946 he was transferred to Sierra Leone where he held the posts of Chief Assistant Colonial Secretary (1946) and Chief Commissioner (1949-1959). He was UK plebiscite administrator for Southern Cameroon between 1960 and 1961, and an Observer at the referendum in Malta in 1964. He was awarded the OBE in 1943 and the CMG in 1951.
