John Halliday Croom was born in Sanquhar, Dumfries, on 15 January 1847. He was educated at the Royal High School in the city, and then studied at Edinburgh University. He also studied in London and Paris. For several years Croom was an Assistant to the Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the University of Edinburgh and he was also a Lecturer on Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Edinburgh School of Medicine, which was then at Minto House. Croom had also been Chairman of the Central Midwives Board for Scotland , a Physician at the Royal Maternity Hospital in Edinburgh, and Consulting Gynaecologist at the Royal Infirmary. His publications include Minor gynaecological operations and appliances (1883), and The bladder during parturition (1883). Croom also made many contributions to scientific and medical journals. Emeritus Professor Sir John Halliday Croom died on 27 September 1923.
