Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Aberdare and District General Hospital opened 19 July 1917 with a provision for 40 beds. A temporary ward with accommodation for 16 beds was opened 24 January 1924 and a Children's Ward with Sun Parlour was subsequently built. Major damage sustained by a fire on 27 September 1929 that claimed the lives of two firemen led to the reconstruction of the Hospital. The formal re-opening by the Duchess of York took place 25 April 1933. The re-modelled Hospital had accommodation for 84 beds and consisted of an Accident Ward with dual operating theatres attached, Male and Female Wards, Children's Wards and an Out-Patients' Department. A Maternity Ward was added in 1939. Demands made upon the Hospital's services by the Emergency Hospital Scheme increased considerably during 1944. In-patient admission of civilians was restricted to emergency cases and on 12 June 1944 the Hospital admitted wounded service patients. By the end of that year 193 Service patients had been admitted. During August 1944 the Aberaman Welfare Hall Annexe was equipped to receive evacuated females and patients were admitted from south-east England while transferred Emergency Medical Service (EMS) patients were admitted from Cardiff Royal Infirmary. Aberdare General Hospital continued to serve the local community into the beginning of the twenty-first century latterly serving as a centre for the care of the elderly. The Hospital closed 2012.
