Ogmore Vale WWII Fire Prevention, Records

Register of persons registered for fire prevention duties in Nantymoel, Lewistown and Evanstown. Register includes; date of application for registration, name and address of applicant, occupation, age, nationality, particulars of exemptions, whether enrolled, enrolment notice served, particulars of release from duties, results of appeals. In some instances remarks are recorded under the heading 'other particulars'.

In January 1941 the government implemented a compulsory scheme of fire watching. Recruits to Fire Watching teams were encouraged from men up to the age of 70 and women up to the age of 60. The duty of a Fire Guard was to take turns in watching for the fall of fire bombs; to warn the neighbourhood when they fell in the area for which they were responsible and to help control any blaze.
