Administrative / Biographical History

Professor David Lawrence Hamblen, CBE, was born in London on the 31 August 1934. He was educated at the Roan School in Greenwich and later studied at London University where he qualified with a MB BS in 1957. He worked at the London Hospital from 1963 to 1966 before becoming a teaching fellow in Orthopaedics at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital from 1966 – 1967. Later that year he returned to the UK and became a Lecturer in Orthopaedics at Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford where he remained until 1968. From 1972 until 1999 he worked as Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Glasgow University whilst also being honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Army in Scotland from 1976 to 1999. He became Chairman of the Greater Glasgow NHS Board in 1997 and held the post until 2002.
