Scope and Content

This series contains notebooks kept by Alan Wace between c.1903 and 1937. Mostly undated, many notebooks contain jotted notes on places, particularly archaeological sites, visited during his travels and notes on objects in museums. Some of these object focused notebooks are thematic, for example notes on sculptures or Hellenistic portraiture, and may be indexed.

Some excavation notebooks are also included in this series, including notebooks for Thessaly excavations in 1910 and 1912, 1933 Troy excavations and Korakou excavations in 1915 and 1916. Some early Mycenae excavation notes are included in the back of previously used notebooks.

Arrangement

As many notebooks are undated and untitled, the original card index order, assigned by Elizabeth French, has been retained.

Access Information

Access to some notebooks may be restricted or closed due to their fragile nature. Please contact the repository for further information.

Other Finding Aids

Spreadsheet catalogue and card index available.

Physical Characteristics and/or Technical Requirements

Some notebooks are hard to read due to Alan Wace's handwriting and use of pencil.

Separated Material

A series of six notebooks on the Sparta excavations were lost prior to 2005. However, they are recorded as having been copied by two researchers in the past.

Related Material

Alan Wace’s excavation notebooks for Mycenae can be found in the Mycenae Excavation and Publication archive. Nine excavation notebooks, mostly relating to Alan Wace’s Vlach research, are in the collection of Pembroke Library.
