Jeremiah Murphy was born in St. Anne's, County Cork, Ireland during January 1881. He enlisted with the Royal Garrison Artillery on 15 March 1900, aged 19. After 8 years of service as Gunner, 6 of which were sent abroad, he was transferred to the Army Reserve. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa medal for his efforts during the campaign of 1901-02, and also served at Mauritius.

He was once again called to the army during the First World War. On transfer to the Reserves, he settled with his mother Mary and brother Edward at Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil, where he took work as a labourer.

On 10 October 1911, he married and settled with his new wife at Church Row, Dowlais. He found work with ICI and Welsh Products at Dowlais. In 1961, he and his wife celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, by which time they had 9 children, 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
