Administrative / Biographical History

Claud Irvine Boswell, Lord Balmuto, was born in 1742. His father was John Boswell of Balmuto, and he was a cousin of Alexander Boswell (1706-1782). He was educated in Dalkeith and then studied at Edinburgh University, after which he was admitted as a member of the Faculty of Advocates on 2 August 1766. In 1780 he was appointed Sheriff-Depute of Fife and Kinross, and in 1799 he was appointed as an ordinary Lord of Session taking his seat as Lord Balmuto. After receiving a shock on the death of Sir Alexander Boswell (1775-1822) at his family home in March 1822, Claud Irvine Boswell died at Balmuto on 22 July 1824.
