The correspondence relates to Petty Officer Edgar Evans, member of the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott) and the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (leader Robert Falcon Scott), Evans was chosen by Scott to be a member of the Pole party who successfully reached the South pole on 17 January 1912 (other members were Scott, Lawrence Oates, Henry Bowers and Edward Wilson). Evans was the first to die on the return journey.
