Loughor Manorial Court Records

Loughor Manor of Newton Nottage court book, bound together in 19th century.

Richard de Cardiff had held the quarter fee of the manor of Newton Nottage, Glamorgan. On his death, the fee was divided between his two daughters under feudal law, therefore becoming two fees of one-eighth each. One-eighth of the fee passed into the possession of the Turberville family of Tythegston. The fee then passed on Richard Turberville's death in 1501 to his eldest son, John, whose daughter and heiress, Gwenllian (d 1558) married Watkin Lougher, of Sker. Glamorgan, Gwenllian's grandson, also named Watkin (1540-1608), was the first Lougher to hold the fee. Katherine, who died in 1732 was the last member of the family to hold the manor, Tythegston and Lougher manor passing by marriage to the Knights of Bristol. The Rev. Robert Knight sold Lougher manor to Sir Joshua John Guest in 1840.
