Administrative / Biographical History

Neath Hundred Petty Sessions began with magistrates exercising jurisdiction over the ancient Hundred of Neath, while separate courts operated in the boroughs of Neath and Aberavon. By 1891 the division had been reduced to include only the parishes of Cadoxton-juxta-Neath, Briton Ferry, Baglan, Glyncorrwg and Llantwit-juxta-Neath. The creation of the Aberavon Petty Sessions Division in 1894 reduced the area still further with the loss of Glyncorrwg and Baglan parishes. Then in 1922 Neath Borough boundaries were extended to take in Briton Ferry and part of Llantwit Lower. In 1974 Neath Hundred was merged with the Neath Borough division to create a division coterminous with the newly created Neath Borough Council.
