Dr Albert Peel instigated the formation of the Scottish Society of Physicians in 1958. It was felt amongst physicians in Scotland that there were many whose professional status and attainments rendered them eligible from membership of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland but who had been unable to secure election because of the small amount of vacancies that arose annually. Also that there were a number of physicians who were debarred from the Association as they were not actively engaged in the teaching of medicine or research. An ad hoc committee met in Perth in January 1959 to draw up a constitution and rules and to appoint interim officers. The first annual meeting was held at Glasgow University in September 1959 and Dr Peel was elected the first President.
Two of the minute books – those for 1959-1963 and 1969-1973 were at one time deposited in the College archives but were subsequently removed by the Society. These have now been returned along with the other minute books.
