Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Company ships first visited Macassar, the main port of Celebes, in 1612, and a factory was established there the following year. Macassar was an important centre for spices and other imports. It received cloves, nutmeg and mace from the Molucca islands, pepper from Banjarmasin, sandalwood from Bima and Timore, cotton cloths from India and other products from around the region. Among its indigenous exports were rice and gold. In 1667 the Dutch attacked the Company's fort and removed the property and the Company's servants to Batavia. The factory was never re-established.
